10 Worst Screen Characters

On this mostly gray Saturday, I was minding my own business struggling through Federal and State tax forms, when I noticed once again I was tagged by that sublime Brit, Crispian Thurlborn, for another game of 10 screen characters. This time the 10 worst. It took me awhile, because when I don’t like the characters I stop watching. Usually. But after much thought and help from my wife, I came up with 10. They are all pretty awful, so in no particular order, here we go:

1. Ronald Merrick, played by Tim Pigott-Smith, in The Jewel in the Crown

2 and 3. Captain Picard and William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation

4. Tilo, played by Aishwarya Rai, in The Mistress of Spices

5. Willy Wonka in the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Ugh!

6. Sherlock Holmes in PBS’s Sherlock. Awful, just awful.

7. The Earl of Grantham in Downton Abbey. Great for getting a good night’s sleep.

8. Katniss in The Hunger Games trilogy. Couldn’t stand her in the books, either.

9. Edward in Twilight. Double Ugh!

10. Bella Swan in Twilight. She could actually be in the running for all time worst.

Oh, the ignominy of it all. Gads!

  1. I read Crispisn’s list and I find yours good too 😉

I haven’t Watched Twilight, I haven’t read the books, and still I feel like you guys’ choice about Edward and Bella is just right. How is it?

    1. OMG! Twilight is a travesty, a blot on vampire literature. IMO. 🙂 I love a good vampire story. Heck even some bad ones! But Twilight? Just awful. Hack romance novel storyline. Mediocre main characters. I find the supporting characters far more interesting. Yet, the author is laughing her way to the bank. Oh, the unfairness of it all. 🙂

  2. I agree wholeheartedly that this was far more of a challenge that the previous list. It’s hard remembering characters that you don’t enjoy.

I have to agree with you on Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Holmes from the BBC’s “Sherlock” series (it’s a shame it made it over the water). I know some rave over this version, but I just can’t get into it. Holmes just doesn’t translate well into the modern world. He belongs to the mystery and shadow of a gas-lit Victorian London.

Haha! I cannot agree with the Earl of Grantham. Perhaps it is because I’m British and passionate about period dramas/literature in general, but I enjoy the character.

Apart from that minor hiccup I’d say you’ve some good nominations there 😉 I think everyone and their dog is going to pick Edward and Bella. My mind feels sullied just remembering their names…

    1. Sullied! That summs up the feeling perfectly! Just awful characters.

I think the show “Elementary” is a better adaptation. Fairly far removed from the Holmes of the gaslight era, but I think the Holmes in “Elementary” is a better reinterpretation, than what we have in the BBC’s attempt.

I love the British period dramas and mysteries we get here from the BBC. My wife and I are glued to the TV whenever they are on here. Usually weekends. And Downton is pretty good with the variety of characters and how well they are played. I just find the Earl pretty flat and one dimensional in juxtaposition to the rest of the cast. And I was struggling to find a 10th! So I threw the Earl under the bus. 🙂
